How to turn maths practice into a fun storybook your child wants to read

By Grandma Jayshree

Child development specialist & teacher

Step 1 - Start with the Basics – Your Child's Details

First, head over to the story creation page on Build Your Book (you'll find it at buildyourbook.in/create). You'll be asked to enter your child's name and age. This is the magical first step, making them the hero of their own learning journey! For instance, if your son is named Rohan and he's 5 years old, simply type that in. This helps the story feel uniquely theirs, immediately capturing their attention.

💡 Grandma's tip: If you have more than one child, you can create separate stories for each, making sure the adventure is just right for their age and interests.

Step 2 - Tell Us the Maths Concept You Want to Explore

Next, you'll describe the core idea for your story. Here's where you integrate the maths! Instead of just saying 'a story about a boy', you can say 'a story about Rohan learning to count from 1 to 10 with his toys' or 'Meera discovering different shapes in her garden'. Be specific about the numbers, operations, or shapes. This ensures the story has a clear educational goal without feeling like a textbook.

Step 3 - Weave a Magical Maths Tale with Indian Context

Now, let your imagination (and your child's interests) take flight! Expand on your maths concept with delightful details. For Rohan counting toys, you could suggest: 'Rohan helps his Dadi count 5 brightly coloured kites for Sankranti, and then 3 more kites fly in. How many kites in total?' Or for Meera, 'Meera finds a circular roti, a square window, and a triangular flag on her walk to the temple.' Adding familiar cultural elements makes the story resonate deeply with your child.

Step 4 - Pick the Perfect Voice and Language

Once you've outlined your story, you'll have the option to choose the language and even a voice for narration. Perhaps your little one loves hearing stories in Marathi, or you'd prefer it in English. You can even clone your own voice or a grandparent's voice for that extra personal touch! Hearing a story in their mother tongue or a beloved voice strengthens comprehension and emotional connection.

Step 5 - Generate and Review Your Story

With all your inputs, the magic happens! Click 'generate' and watch as your personalized maths story comes to life. Once it's ready, take a moment to read through it. Check if the maths concept is clear and woven naturally into the plot, and if the adventure is engaging for your child. Don't be shy to make a few edits if needed! A quick review ensures the story meets your specific educational and entertainment goals.

Step 6 - Share and Celebrate the Learning!

Finally, gather your little one and enjoy the story together! Read it aloud, point out the numbers, shapes, or counting moments. Ask them questions: 'How many butterflies did Arjun count on page 3?' or 'Can you find another triangle in the picture?' Make it a joyful, interactive experience. This positive reinforcement builds a love for both reading and learning maths, one delightful story at a time.
