How to turn maths practice into a fun storybook your child wants to read
By Grandma Jayshree

Step 1 - Introduce Your Child as the Hero
First, head over to the creation page on Build Your Book. You’ll be prompted to enter your child's name, age, and choose their likeness for the story. Think of a personality trait that makes your child unique – are they brave like a little warrior, or curious like a tiny detective? This helps set the stage for a character they can truly relate to.
This makes the story immediately personal and exciting, drawing your child in from the very first page.
Step 2 - Select the 'Educational' Story Category
Once you’ve set up your child’s character, select 'Educational' from the story categories. This tells our clever story-builder that your main goal is learning, not just a whimsical adventure. You'll find categories like Kids, Adventure, Fantasy, Moral Stories, and Regional Stories too, but for maths, 'Educational' is our best friend.
Choosing the right category ensures the story's structure naturally supports a learning objective.
Step 3 - Clearly Define the Maths Concept
Now for the fun part! In the prompt box, describe the specific maths concept you want to teach. For example, if it's counting to 10, write: 'Arjun needs to count 10 bright marigold flowers for his grandmother's pooja.' If it's simple addition, try: 'Meera finds 3 gulab jamuns and then finds 2 more. How many does she have now?' Add details about the setting – maybe a busy market in Bengaluru or a quiet village in Punjab.
Being specific helps the story integrate the maths seamlessly into a narrative your child can follow and interact with.
Step 4 - Weave a Fun, Engaging Plot Around the Maths
Don't just state the maths problem; embed it within an exciting plot. For instance, 'Arjun's friend Saanvi has lost her patang (kite). To find it, they need to solve a riddle involving counting the stars in the night sky.' Or 'Meera wants to bake a special Eid cake, but she needs to add up the correct number of eggs and sugar packets from the recipe.' Introduce challenges and triumphs.
This transforms a 'sum' into a suspenseful moment or a joyful discovery, making the learning memorable.
Step 5 - Choose Your Preferred Language and Narration
Before generating, you can pick from 16 languages, perfect for keeping your little one rooted in their mother tongue, especially for NRI families abroad. You can also opt for gentle TTS (text-to-speech) narration for bedtime mode, or even clone your own voice or Dadi's voice for a truly personal touch. It’s lovely to hear a familiar voice telling a brand new story!
This adds another layer of comfort and engagement, making the storytime experience even more special.
Step 6 - Generate and Review Your Storybook
With your details in place, hit 'Generate'. Our system will quickly craft a beautiful storybook complete with illustrations. Take a moment to review it. Does the maths problem make sense? Is the story engaging? You can always make small edits to the text to fine-tune it if you wish, ensuring it's just right for your little one.
A quick review ensures the story aligns perfectly with your teaching goals and your child's interests.
💡 Grandma's tip: If the first draft isn't quite right, try tweaking your prompt slightly, adding more specific details about the setting or characters, and re-generating!
Step 7 - Read Together and Reinforce Learning
Now, sit down with your child and read their personalised maths adventure! Point out where they solved the problem, celebrate their character's triumph, and perhaps even act out parts of the story. Remember, the first storybook is free, and after that, each new story costs just ₹50. What a small price for so much learning and joy! You can find everything to create your child's personalized story at buildyourbook.in/create.
Reading together fosters a love for both stories and learning, making maths a positive experience they’ll want to repeat.
