How to turn maths practice into a fun storybook your child wants to read

By Grandma Jayshree

Child development specialist & teacher

Step 1 - Open the Storybook Creator

Begin by visiting the special story builder on buildyourbook.in/create. This is your starting point, my dears, where we'll plant the first seeds of your child's very own math adventure. You'll see a friendly interface ready for your input.

This is where the magic of transforming numbers into adventures begins, right at your fingertips.

Step 2 - Tell us about your little hero and their learning goal

Next, gently enter your child's name, like 'Arjun' or 'Saanvi', and their age. This helps tailor the story to their developmental stage. More importantly, in the story prompt box, specify the math concept you want to focus on – for instance, 'simple addition up to 10', 'counting rupees', 'identifying 2D shapes', or 'understanding measurement'.

Making your child the main character instantly boosts their engagement and makes learning deeply personal.

Step 3 - Choose a language and an engaging theme

Select a language that your child loves and connects with – perhaps Hindi, Tamil, or English, especially for our NRI families abroad who want to keep children rooted in their mother tongue. Then, pick a fun, imaginative theme like 'Adventure in the Mango Orchard', 'Mystery at Diwali Mela', or 'Journey through the Himalayan Mountains'.

A familiar language connects them to their roots, and an exciting theme hides the 'learning' within pure fun.

💡 Grandma's tip: For parents abroad, generating stories in a regional language like Gujarati or Punjabi can be a lovely way to keep your child connected to their heritage while learning!

Step 4 - Weave in the math problems naturally

This is the clever bit, my dears! In the story prompt, suggest how the math problems can become integral to the narrative. For example, 'Arjun needs to count how many laddoos his Auntie gave him (4) and how many more Grandma gave (5) to find the total for Holi celebrations.' Or, 'Meera has ₹10, and she wants to buy a kalakand for ₹3 and a jalebi for ₹4. How much change does she get from the shopkeeper?'.

Instead of rote questions, these challenges become exciting obstacles for your little hero to overcome on their journey.

Step 5 - Generate and review your story

Click the 'Generate Story' button. In a moment, you'll have a draft! Take a moment to read through it, my dears. See if the math concepts are integrated smoothly and the story flows well. Sometimes, a little tweak in your prompt or a regenerated story can make all the difference.

A quick review ensures the story is just right, captivating your child while subtly teaching.

Step 6 - Refine and personalise further (optional)

If you wish, you can edit parts of the story – perhaps add a character resembling their favourite uncle, or change a setting to their ancestral village in Kerala. You can re-generate with slightly different prompts if the first attempt isn't quite perfect, making it truly bespoke for your little one.

Small personal touches make the story uniquely theirs, a treasure they’ll want to revisit often and share with family.

Step 7 - Share the adventure with your child!

Once you're satisfied, it's time for the best part! Read the story aloud to your child, or use the audio mode for a bedtime treat. You can even print it out for a tangible book. Watch their eyes light up as they solve the 'challenges' alongside their story alter-ego!

The ultimate goal is shared joy and effortless learning, making math a beloved part of their world.
