How to Turn Maths Practice into a Fun Storybook Your Child Wants to Read

By Grandma Jayshree

Child development specialist & teacher

Step 1 - Visit the Build Your Book Creator Page

First, my dears, open your web browser and navigate to the creation page on Build Your Book. Think of this as stepping into a magical workshop where stories come to life! It's a user-friendly space designed for parents like you, so don't worry about complicated steps. This is where your journey to making maths fun begins, setting the stage for an engaging experience.

Step 2 - Enter Your Child's Details and Preferred Language

On the page, you'll see fields to enter your little one's name and age. This is crucial for truly personalising the story. You can also pick a language – perhaps Hindi for Saanvi, or Tamil for Karthik, to keep them rooted in their mother tongue, especially for our NRI families abroad. Making your child the hero instantly grabs their attention and makes the story feel uniquely theirs.

💡 Grandma's tip: If your child prefers stories in a regional language, choose from the 16 available languages for an even more immersive experience.

Step 3 - Select the 'Educational' Category

Now, choose 'Educational' from the list of story categories. This tells our clever story-builder that you're aiming for a learning-focused narrative. You might also find 'Kids' or 'Moral Stories' interesting for other times, but for maths, 'Educational' is our best friend. This selection guides the story's theme, ensuring it incorporates learning elements effectively.

💡 Grandma's tip: Explore other categories like 'Adventure' or 'Fantasy' another day for pure imaginative fun!

Step 4 - Craft Your Maths-Focused Story Prompt

This is where your creativity truly shines! In the text box, describe a simple scenario involving a maths concept you want to practice. For example: 'Arjun needs to count 12 ladoos to share equally among his 3 friends for Eid. How many ladoos does each friend get?' or 'Meera is helping her Dadi arrange flowers. She has 20 marigolds and needs to make bouquets of 5. How many bouquets can she make?' A clear, engaging prompt ensures the story directly addresses the maths skill you wish to teach.

💡 Grandma's tip: Use familiar Indian contexts like festivals, cooking, or family gatherings to make the scenario relatable and fun.

Step 5 - Generate and Review Your Unique Story

Once your prompt is ready, simply click the 'Generate Story' button. In moments, you'll see a beautiful, custom-made story appear, featuring your child as the star, navigating and solving the maths challenge. Read it through carefully. If you wish to tweak something – perhaps make the numbers a little easier or harder – you can always edit the prompt and generate again. Reviewing ensures the story perfectly fits your child's learning level and interests.

Step 6 - Enjoy Reading and Learning Together

Now for the best part – share the story with your little one! Read it aloud, watch their eyes light up as they hear their own name, and discuss the maths problem within the story. You can even use the 'Bedtime mode' for a gentle narration that lulls them to sleep without you having to read aloud yourself. This shared experience makes learning interactive, strengthens your bond, and associates maths with positive feelings.

💡 Grandma's tip: Encourage your child to 'solve' the problem along with the character in the story. It makes the learning active!
